• Demand for power is rising by 4.5 percent a year. Over the next 20 years, electricity generation capacity needs to be increased from 17,000 megawatts to 67,000 megawatts. • Saudi Arabia relies on desalination to help meet the large demand for water and has become the world's largest producer of desalinated water, producing 30 percent of the world's capacity, it currently generates 3,600MW of electric power by desalination, and experts believe this to touch the 5,000MW when the new desalination and power plants are on stream.
